Somewhat of a rare pony this one. Really want to keep it, but it’s the time old story, too many projects and not enough space. Plus it’d be a waste of bike for the skills that I have nowadays. I believe it to be original paint and decals, which is nice, in pretty good condition all around really, its obviously been sat around as a project for more of its life than its been ridden for. Scuffs here and there, stuff that will polish out with some effort. Some paint chips from chain slap. And some tyre rub. There’s a crappy paint chip just infront of the seat post clamp from bad storage and moving. I’d say that’s the worst blemish. Original stickers I think with a bunch of period extra stickers which I’m always a fan of and really don’t like taking them off as they really show a place in time where it came from. Has a dmr bb adapter fitted which seems in good order. And, the very very rare original hope rear mount – along with a full set of hope brakes – front and rear. These will absolutely need a full rebuild. The rear lever was separated from the hose as the hose was already messed up and the lever waving around was risking chiping the frame some more, so off it came. Includes seatpost and clamp and 24seven seat. However, sadly and annoyingly it does not include the rear dropout kit. Although it seems these are slightly easier to get a hold of than the hope mount so at least there’s that. A really cool rig. It really deserves some energy to make it great again.

Lee Cooper LA Cycles Retro Steel MTB Frame and Forks like Chas Roberts DOGSBOLX 18.5. Here we have a very rare beast. In fact it’s the only one ever built. Lee Cooper is a master frame builder based in Coventry. He’s done contract building for most of the British frame manufacturers and for a time in the 1990′s he and business partner Al, ran LA Cycles behind John Atkins Cycles on Far Gosford Street. Lee was the builder and Al was the painter. Their bikes were fully custom in the vane of Dave Yates, Chas Roberts et al and on the rare occasion their bikes were tested in magazines, they loved them. In the late 80′s and early 90′s, spurred on by the popularity of mountain biking in USA, most of these British builders started adding MTB frames to their traditional road bike offerings. This is a prototype that Lee built for himself to test ideas. It uses a combination of fillet brazing and lugs for the high end skinny steel Columbus and Reynolds tubes (he can’t remember exactly what model they are). You can see where Lee has experimented with tyre vs crank clearance by heating the tubing and “manipulating” with a heavy object! It was originally built around the chrome-plated steel threaded fork but Lee also used the suspension forks seen in the photos which are SR Suntour 8500′s in a very similar (but not exact same) yellow shade with matching graphics. This has not been used for many years. The stanchions are good, the adjusters work and there is no excessive slop of play but they will need a full service if you intend to ride them. Please note these are threadless for aheadset systems and have a long 180mm 1 steerer. Both forks are included in this sale. The yellow frame paint is original and although there are quite a lot of chips, it’s deep and glossy. The chips could be easily touched in if required. I know Lee quite well both from bitd and from doing a lot of frame repairs on my retro MTB fleet and so when he was moving his workshop he offered me his old frames. All but two are now gone and this is the last one to be listed. I’ve got too many bikes so it’s time to move it on to an appreciative collector. Bring fully custom, it’s not a “size” as such but I guess you’d call it a 18.5 based on seat tube length centre to top. The actual dimensions are. Seat tube centre to top: 18.5. Seat tube centre to centre: 15.75. Top tube effective horizontal with the rigid forks: 23. Head tube end to end: 5. Seat post diameter: 27.2mm. Front mech diameter: 28.6mm. Headset: 1 threaded (rigid) / threadless (suspension). Fork axle to crown: 39cm (rigid) / 440mm suspension. Rear axle spacing is 130mm but you can splay them slightly to get a 135mm wide hub in if you like. Frame mass: 1915g. Rigid fork mass: 920g. Suspension fork mass: 1750g. Do some research on retro bike, it was a thing. I bought it as a project but not enough time and this one really is a big project. These frames have a habit of braking the bonds between the glued tubes and lugs. The paint on the lugs are one sneeze away from fully going, as the alloy has oxidised underneath the paint. It only has one brake mount so will need to source or make one. The main linkage between shock and rear stays is missing so again, source or make. Everything is rusted or oxidised. Seat post isn’t seized luckily. The bb present seems good but I dare try to take it out, I think it holds the chain stays in place as it pivots here. A big project but only if you’re brave. Not for me, I’ve got a house that needs rebuilding you know how it is. They do look very nice when fully built up, last picture is obviously for inspiration and is nothing to do with me.

DeKerf Singlespeed Retro 18.5 MTB Frame Reynolds 725 Circa 2000. If you know your retro and high-end Canadian steel, you’ll know that Chris DeKerf has been very highly rated right from when he first started making frames under his own name in the early 1990′s. He had previously worked at Rocky Mountain and others before deciding to go it alone. I first became aware of them in 1994, when they had only one model, the Mountain, made from the finest Ritchey WCS tubing, mainly TIG welded but with a’work-of-art’ fillet brazed wishbone and seat-cluster. They subsequently added a slightly cheaper model, the Generation, made from Reynolds 631 which lost the fillet brazed seat cluster area, and the top of the range hardtail was renamed the SL, made from Reynolds 853 tubing. The Singlespeed is effectively a gear-less version of the Generation. This is in one of the three iconic DeKerf colours: metallic Tangerine. I’ve taken photos on a dull-winter day to make the details stand out better but in a bright day, it really pops and sparkles in the sun. In very good used condition with superficial light scuffs and chips to the paint on most of the tubes, some of which have been touched in with a slightly lighter shade. No dents, cracks or corrosion other than to the chainstay bridge where the paint has bubbled. The previous owner said it had been like that “for years”. I’d say it’s an 8/10 cosmetically but it’s important to note that the paint and decals are original. You could definitely make it a 9/10 if you bought some touch up paint in the correct shade and were patient. Size wise it’s an 18.5. I’ve added a photo from the 2000 brochure with the frame dimensions which tally well with my own, taken with a 420mm a-c fork which would approximately tally with that fitted to the bike in the brochure. Seat tube c-c: 16 / 40.5cm. Seat tube c-t: 18.5 / 470mm. Top tube c-c horizontal: 22.75 / 580mm. Head tube: 4 / 100mm. Seatpost diameter: 27.2mm. Headset: 1 1/8. Rear dropout spacing: 135mm. Frame tubing: Reynolds 725. Frame mass: 1895g. I’m not certain it’s exactly a year 2000 bike but the specs mean it is from that era. Later models were renamed the Solitaire. Frame number is DEK1613. Chris never made production SS bike from the more expensive Reynolds 853 tubing but the mass difference is minimal; a few tens of grams. It’s for rim brakes and no gears! Will be carefully packed with each tube wrapped in new, thick plumbers foam pipe lagging and sent via parcel force. I’m thinning my collection of DeKerfs from 7 to 1! And also have an 18.5″ Team SL disc in goldy-green and great condition and a 17.6″ Team SL disc which needs a repaint. I’ll be listing these in time but let me know if you are interested and I can pop them up sooner.

A lot, but doesn’t lockout fully. Some bobbling around the bottle cage bolt holes on the underside of the down tube. Salewill include seat clamp, but seat post is not included. Lovely black with silver parts looks great. Perfect for a winter retro bike build project. Pivot bearings are all good. Its a 2006 so it does have little marks here and there but nothing major, especially for its age its in really good condition. You can tell its not been used much in its lifetime.
